Musical break

Dread Zeppelin, Good Times, Bad Times.
For those who don't know about Dread Zeppelin, here is the equation :
Dread Zeppelin = Led Zeppelin lyrics, Reggea music, Elvis Presley voice.

The price of the bread

It seems difficult to starve here if you have a few euros in your pocket. The cheapest bread at the supermarket costs 1,5 pesos (0,09€ less than 10 cents !). Ok, it's not good bread, it's not very big, but it'll do for a sandwich for example.

NO WAY

Wtf beer.
I don't know what that is and I don't really care.

The Mexican VW Beetle

There are a lot of this model in the streets, even taxis, despite their (small) size. But there is a very good reason for that : they were introduced in Mexico in 1954 and assembled here since 1967.

You can read more about the Mexican species of the Beetle on Wikipedia.

Where to buy cheap electronic bits in Mexico City ?

I needed a Europe-to-USA power adapter. I entered the first Radio Shack shop I spotted in a mall and found what I was looking for for... 89 pesos (> 5€, USD6.5), so I didn't buy it. Same mall, another shop called Steren, and there, bingo ! Same little adapter for 14 pesos (0.8€, USD1) ! I bought 2 of them.

Find the post box

I couldn't find the post boxes in the streets until Lorely spotted one for me.

So just for your information, these are located on the sidewalks, most often under the billboards.

Sidewalk vs tree

Tree 1
Sidewalk 0

The sidewalks are not always in good shape, they might have holes, missing tiles, etc. I guess the earthquakes don't help with the situation.

Again, tree wins.

Punto de Reunion

The city is made of high buildings hosting offices while the houses are maximum 4 storeys high for security reasons : the region is often hit by earthquakes.

Each building must have a Punto de Reunion (meeting point) where you should rush during an earthquake. I know that this won't be very helpful to me since I'll just stay paralyzed (I've experienced a short one in Athens, Greece, and all I could do is stare at the oscillating chandelier).

Mexico city : impact on my health

Mexico city : one of the most polluted city of the planet and combined to the high altitude (above 2200m) those factors had the following side effects on me :

  • Nose (slightly) bleeding (that never happens to me)
  • Headache in the evening (ditto)
  • Bronchial irritation (e.g. I cough)
  • Shortness of breath
The main cause of the last symptom is due to stairs + carrying beer.

Stairs
The damn stairs
After 4 days, the breathing and headache problems are almost solved.

I hadn't any stomach related problems, thanks to the advices given by Lorely :

  • don't drink tap water (drink beer !)
  • vegetable must be carefully washed using a special disinfectant
  • don't eat or drink anything sold in the street.
I think that an heavy rain helps : today for the first time in 4 days I could see the mountains surrounding the city, and I almost didn't cough.

Mexico city, cars' kingdom

A friend of Lorely was waiting for us at the airport. She drove us to Lorely's apartment, a 30 minutes drive maybe ?

The first thing I noticed was the cars : it seemed to me that the streets were crowded by only 2 different types of vehicles, namely :

  1. large SUV's (Chevrolet, Land Rover, etc.) or luxurious cars (Mercedes, Audi, etc.),
  2. VW Beetles (or any little old car in the worse condition you ever saw). Most taxis are very small cars.
Type 1 cars make the streets look like the (wealthy area of) USA, while the type 2 more like some Indian suburb I guess.

I cannot say the Mexican driver drives badly, they just ignore all the rules but seem less aggressive than the Parisian species. Also I suspect that they confuse the horn with the accelerator pedal. Another theory is that like dolphins or whales their cars have their own way of communicating with each other.

Forgetting that cars can turn right at the red light when the light is red can kill you. Also, like in the USA, the red light is on the other side of the intersection.

Green light, green car.
Red already ? Who cares.
Crossing Insurgentes
As you can see on the picture above medium sized cars are the majority in the city.

Iggy Pop - The passenger

"The Passenger"

I am the passenger and I ride and I ride
I ride through the city's backsides
I see the stars come out of the sky
Yeah, the bright and hollow sky
You know it looks so good tonight
I am the passenger
I stay under glass
I look through my window so bright
I see the stars come out tonight
I see the bright and hollow sky
Over the city's ripped backsides
And everything looks good tonight
Singing la la la la la.. lala la la, la la la la.. lala la la etc
Get into the car
We'll be the passenger
We'll ride through the city tonight
We'll see the city's ripped backsides
We'll see the bright and hollow sky
We'll see the stars that shine so bright
Stars made for us tonight
Oh, the passenger
How, how he rides
Oh, the passenger
He rides and he rides
He looks through his window
What does he see?
He sees the sign and hollow sky
He sees the stars come out tonight
He sees the city's ripped backsides
He sees the winding ocean drive
And everything was made for you and me
All of it was made for you and me
'Cause it just belongs to you and me
So let's take a ride and see what's mine
Singing la la la la.. lala la la [x3]
Oh the passenger
He rides and he rides
He sees things from under glass
He looks through his window side
He sees the things that he knows are his
He sees the bright and hollow sky
He sees the city sleep at night
He sees the stars are out tonight
And all of it is yours and mine
And all of it is yours and mine
So let's ride and ride and ride and ride
Oh, oh, Singing la la la la lalalala

Pictures aboard AF438

The aircraft is a Boeing 747-400, and it's gorgeous. The crew was very friendly and helpful. Here are some silly pictures you can take during a 11+ hours flight...

The route

As you can see the route is not obvious but allows you to see a little bit of Greenland, Quebec, Chicago lakes, Gulf of Mexico, among others. My seat wasn't next to a window. I know that's a bad excuse for bad quality pictures. Also I was hoping that the pics would be geo-tagged, but there are not, that's probably a side effect of the plane mode of the iPhone.

Misc pictures
